How to Quickly Clean Your Garbage Disposal this Thanksgiving

Is your garbage disposal full of Turkey? Is it giving off a strange odor? If you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner this holiday, chances are your garbage disposal will fill up with more gunk than normal. After slaving in the kitchen all day, the last thing you want to do is smell your garbage disposal or worry if it’s clogged. To quickly clean your garbage disposal, check out these simple tips below from R.V. Carey’s!

How to Quickly Eliminate Odors

If you notice strange smells coming from your garbage disposal, there are a few ways to quickly resolve the problem:

  • Dish soap – simply run hot water in your garbage disposal for about a minute. Then, squirt about a tablespoon of dish soap in the disposal. With the water still running, turn on the disposal and let it run for about 30 seconds or until all the bubbles disappear.
  • Ice cubes – if you are putting sticky items in your garbage disposal (such as sweet potato casserole), an easy way to clean the blades is using ice cubes. Simply shove a few ice cubes in the disposal, and with the water running turn it on. The chunks of the ice cubes will help remove odor-causing food particles that could be stuck to the blades.
  • Baking soda and vinegar – pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup vinegar. Once the solution fizzes and cleans the blades, you can pour hot water down the drain and turn on the disposal to get any residue off of the blades.

Jammed Garbage Disposal

Before you attempt to unclog your garbage disposal, make sure your equipment is unplugged to eliminate the risk of electric shock or injury. The easiest way to try and unclog the disposal is with long tweezers or pliers. With the disposal unplugged, shine a flashlight into the unit and search for any object that cannot be blended—such as metal or glass. Objects that cannot be blended can result in a jammed garbage disposal or worse—permanent damage.  If you do not see anything in the disposal but it is still not working properly, contact your local plumber to schedule a garbage disposal repair.
